Cardiac and behavioural responses to hypoxia and warming in free-swimming gilthead seabream, <i>Sparus aurata</i>

چکیده
ABSTRACT Gilthead seabream were equipped with intraperitoneal biologging tags to investigate cardiac responses hypoxia and warming, comparing when fish either swimming freely in a tank conspecifics or confined individual respirometers. After tag implantation under anaesthesia, heart rate (fH) required 60 h recover stable value holding tank. Subsequently, undisturbed control conditions (normoxia, 21°C), mean fH was always significantly lower the than In progressive (100% 15% oxygen saturation), respirometers at levels down 40%, significant bradycardia both below this level. Simultaneous logging of tri-axial body acceleration revealed that spontaneous activity, inferred as variance external (VARm), low invariant hypoxia. Warming (21 31°C) caused tachycardia no differences between conditions. Mean VARm was, however, higher during positive relationship across all temperatures. Therefore, activity contributed raising warming. had highly linear rates uptake, considering data from warming together. The high indicates respirometry techniques may bias estimates metabolic traits some fishes, on free-swimming will provide more reliable insight into behavioural environmental stressors by their natural environment.

متن کاملTitle: Cardiac responses to hypoxia and reoxygenation in Drosophila Running Title: Cardiac responses to hypoxia
An adequate supply of oxygen is important for the survival of all tissues, but is especially critical for tissues with high energy demands such as the heart. Insufficient tissue oxygenation occurs under a variety of conditions, including high altitude, embryonic and fetal development, inflammation, and thrombotic diseases, often affecting multiple organ systems. Responses and adaptations of the...
متن کاملBehavioural, brain and cardiac responses to hypobaric hypoxia in broiler chickens.
A novel approach to pre-slaughter stunning of chickens has been developed in which birds are rendered unconscious by progressive hypobaric hypoxia. Termed Low Atmospheric Pressure Stunning (LAPS), this approach involves application of gradual decompression lasting 280s according to a prescribed curve. We examined responses to LAPS by recording behaviour, electroencephalogram (EEG) and electroca...
متن کاملFeeding, physiology and growth responses in first-feeding gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) larvae in relation to prey density
21 The effects of prey density (0.1, 1 and 10 rotifer ml ) on feeding, oxygen uptake, growth, survival and energetic efficiencies in Sparus aurata larvae were investigated. Dry weights and 21 total lengths at day 15 after hatching were similar in larvae fed with 10 and 1 rotifer ml but 21 were significantly higher than in larvae fed with 0.1 rotifer ml . These differences were a consequence of ...
